First post on Better Bengaluru : Clean Bengaluru

Hi Folks,

This is my first post on conceiving and creating a better Bengaluru for everyone.

I work in the software industry and have called Bengaluru home since 1992.

Today I wish to highlight one of  the most important topic which every Bengalurean should ponder which is how to keep Bengaluru clean.

Since its a civic responsibility I am sure all bengalureans would be looking forward to such activities.

Some might even be contributing in a great measure.

One aspect that I notice  is not yet in place is related to the aspect Garbage collection.

Even though the civic authorities are having a robust garbage collection team which does a phenomenal job managing the garbage that gets generated.

the garbage collection is only possible when the garbage collectors show up at the peoples doors.

I add some points below which tries to highlight the current status or situation,

  • If a person knows he or she has furniture which they wishe to dispose of. There are no earmarked places or containers where they could dump the wooden furniture.
  • Similarly if a citizen has electronic waste which he has segregated and wishes to dispose in an earmarked area there is no facility provided to do this. This means the civic authorities are burdened for such collections where-in the average citizen can himself do the needful.
  • Working families who are not around when the Garbage collectors come calling can benefit by planning their waste disposal. There are instances where some citizens are seen dumping waste on the vacant roads when they cannot wait for the garbage collector

Suggestions:

  1. Identify an isloated area with less residents closeby and place containers which are designated for each kind of waste. This will allow citizens to also put segregated waste appropriately.
  2. Containers can be recycled by scrap merchants or the garbage maintainers appropriately on a schedule.
  3. Scrap merchants can be contracted to handle this so they also benefit.
  4. Garbage collected smartly this way will also leave the roads clean, allow drains to be free of dumped garbage.
  5. Systematic segregation of waste becomes each citizens responsibility and can be inculcated in every Bengalurean.
